Thinking about changing your name? Here is what you need to know.
Changing your name in the UK is generally a straightforward legal process, whether you wish to adopt a new first name, change your surname, alter the spelling of your name or change your name for personal reasons.
How does the process work?
For most adults in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, a deed poll (also known as Change of Name Deed) is the usual way to formally document a change of name. If you are aged 16 or over, you can generally make an unenrolled deed poll, provided the change is lawful. For children under 16, those with parental responsibility can change the child’s name provided they obtain written consent from everyone else who also holds parental responsibility (in many instances, the other parent)
Once your deed poll has been properly completed and signed, you can use it as evidence of your new name. You can then contact relevant organisations, such as banks, HM Passport Office and the DVLA, to update your records. Each organisation may have its own evidence requirements.
Are there any legal restrictions?
